Sunday April 14th 2002, Fabulous Fords Forever, Knotts Berry Farm, Buena Park California
Spotted parked next to the Ford SVT trailer, flanked by the just released Focus SVT, the 2003 Mustang Cobra there was adifferent kind of car.
Labeled the SVT Focus Competition Package at first it appears to be a Focus SVT done up for show, featuring a partially painted carbon fiber hood and a plethora of stickers, it seems at first glance to be a SVT Focus that fell into the wrong hands.
Further inspection reveals more, a new headlight cluster catches your eye, these are the same headlights introduced on certian models of the European Focus beginning in 2002, including the Focus SVT's cousin, the European Focus ST170.
Reading the board posted on the windshield this concept car gets even more interesting. The Competition Package is set up to make the SVT Focus what many wished it was from the beginning, a high performance, no frills, class dominating, race ready beast.
SVT Has set out to make the Focus SVT lighter, more nimble and of course more powerful, and has in the process created a dream car for many. The information board reads:
- Designed and developed to deliver maximum performance within racing regulations defined by major US race sanctioning bodies, Targeting National Championships in SCCA Showroom Stock B, SCCA Pro Rally Production, FIA Group A, and G5 classes, and SCCA D-Stock Autocross.
- The Immense Flexibility of the SVT Focus platform and adjustability of the Competitive Package suspension would position the car to battle for overall honors in all motorsport disciplines, enabling SVT to steal Honda, Acura, Nissan, and Mazda's thuder in Club Motorsports for years to come.
- With the addition of a 6 point roll change and fire extinguisher (not included), the SVT Focus Competition Package would be completely road race and rally ready. This would be the most comprehesive OE race pachange on the market.
- Because of it's high feature content and associated extreme performance, it is highly likely that customers will want examples for the street. SVT could offer a "Street" option, adding A/C, radio, rear seat, and spoiler to accomodate these requests.
Looking inside this car you notice the Sparco race seats and the complete lack of a back seat, the guage cluster looks the same as the typical SVT Focus. In the back, where the back seat would be is another card with some more impressive information on cards:

Some observation I made based on the information:
- The appearance of the Fuji LSD on the spec sheet indicates that there will indeed be a LSD available on the market for the Getrag 6 Speed found in the Focus SVT (as well as the Mini Cooper S). The absence of an LSD in the SVT is arguably the weakest aspect of the car.
- A significant amount of performance addons and an optimized PCM program results in an only 10Hp gain over the Focus SVT. Does this indication limitations in the ability of tuners to extract much more power out of the Focus SVT with out Forced Induction?
- Since these parts would be available in the Ford parts system, would this have an impact on "tuner" shopw that resell aftermarket performace parts?
